A Day at the Arnold Palmer Cup

Some days remind you why golf is unlike any other sport. Our recent visit to the Arnold Palmer Cup at Tralee Golf Club was one of those days — a celebration of world-class golf, breathtaking scenery and the enduring friendships that make the game so special.

The Arnold Palmer Cup has long been one of amateur golf's most prestigious international team events, bringing together many of the world's most talented young collegiate golfers to compete in the spirit of excellence, sportsmanship and international friendship. Many former competitors have gone on to become stars on the professional tours, making the event a rare chance to watch the future of the game before the rest of the world catches on.

This year's championship found a fitting home at Tralee Golf Club. Perched on the edge of Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, Tralee is one of the world's great links courses. Designed by Arnold Palmer himself, who famously described the opening nine holes as "the most spectacular nine in golf," the course provided a fitting backdrop to an event that proudly carries his name.

The course rewards imagination and demands trust for the blind shots only links golf can produce — and every walk to the next tee reveals another sweep of the wild Atlantic coastline as your reward.

Throughout the week, players from across the United States and around the world took on a challenge only authentic links golf can provide. Firm fairways, towering dunes, changing winds and unpredictable bounces demanded imagination as much as precision. Every match showcased not only exceptional talent, but the resilience, creativity and sportsmanship that define the very best competitors.

The field featured a number of the world's top 10 men's and women's amateurs — Luke Poulter, Josiah Gilbert, Ryder Cowan, Kiara Romero, Farah O'Keefe and Maria Jose Marin among them. It was a front-row seat to future PGA and LPGA Tour stars, future Ryder Cup players and future Major champions, before the rest of the golfing world finds out who they are.

Team International were the eventual winners, edging out Team USA 30.5–29.5 in a thrilling Sunday afternoon finish — the closest margin of victory in the Arnold Palmer Cup since 2000.

The atmosphere around the club was just as memorable as the golf. Members, volunteers, families and travelling supporters created a warm, welcoming environment, while spectators walked alongside tomorrow's stars in one of the most spectacular settings in the game. There was a genuine sense that everyone present knew they were watching something special — golf in one of its purest forms.

The standout moment, though, was a walk around the course with current Walker Cup Captain Dean Robertson — talking through the golf on display at the Arnold Palmer Cup, the upcoming Walker Cup at Lahinch Golf Club (5–6 September 2026), and his memories of playing alongside Tiger Woods. It's the kind of conversation that only happens in a place like this.

It captured something bigger than the golf itself: the Atlantic as a constant backdrop, a warm welcome from volunteers and members, clubhouse conversations with visitors from around the world, strangers connecting over a shared passion for the game.
